Chemistry of Love
'Chemistry of Love' was commissioned for the library at Hetton, a small mining town. The most popular section of the library was the Romance Section, and after reading numerous 'Mills and Boon' books for the first time ever, I decided to create an artwork based on the flip side of romance.
The work developed by running workshops with local women who looked at the traditional symbols of romance represented in novels and evolved into considering the effects of destructive relationships. The resulting work includes images of women who eventually killed their abusive partners.
The response to the work, much of which was made on site, was heart-warming. Hetton has a high population of elderly people who spend many a happy hour recounting their happy years of marriage.
