Passage
'Passage' was created for an exhibition I initiated for 49 artists, living and working in Sunderland, entitled, 'On the Corner'.
The building was fantastic, as it enabled all of the exhibitors to have an individual space to present their work as they chose, thus avoiding huge curatal problems!
I chose to create an installation, at the end of a very long corridor (hence the title), which considered ideas based on our unknown experiences within our lifespan, and the choices and decisions that we make on that journey.
The grimace, or unearthly grin contained in the plaster casts of teeth reflects the only factor known to us all, that we will ultimately die. Layers of insect net shrouded the unpalatable truth, and a huge mirror behind provided a hazy reflection of the viewers, including them in an uncomfortable glimpse of their ultimate destiny.
The exhibition 'On the Corner' was reviewed in the Art Council of England's catalogue, which nominated the best events of Visual Arts UK 1996,
