Strands 'Strands' was the result of a six-month residency at Bridon Ropes Ltd, Wallsend, Tyne and Wear. The original ropery was called 'Haggies', and traditionally employed women in a male dominated industrialised area. The project involved organising reunions of former workers, known as 'Haggies Angels', due to their formidable reputation. Their memories were incorporated into an archival exhibition that documented the social changes and working conditions throughout this century and reclaimed historical documents buried in Doncaster archives. During the project the women has moulds of their feet cast in plaster, which were incorporated into the installation. Strands was created in response to recollections of the dreadful accidents balanced against fond memories of the women who loved the camaraderie and the strong friendships they formed whilst working at the ropery. |
